Carrot tops, prunings and other garden debris are added back into the bottom of the raised bed to ensure continued renewal of nutrients and soil structure over time.
Inspired by the brilliance of the at-risk honeybee, I designed hexagonal raised beds. Together with the local woodshop the WerkStattCouch, we built seven beds including integrated seating. After I left Innsbruck, the group planted the beds with berry bushes, herbs, and vegetables. They transformed the concrete campus grounds to a lively, green social space which invites students, faculty and the public to interact, get their hands dirty, or simply enjoy a fresh, local snack.
